Barcelona ranks as one of the top five startup hubs in the EU for the third year in a row, only behind Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, and Amsterdam, according to the 2026 StartupBlink Global Index. This is not just a lucky streak but a sign that the city has spent years building the infrastructure, talent, and capital it needs to compete at the top of the European tech landscape.

Where Barcelona stands in Europe

The data backs it up. Barcelona’s tech ecosystem is worth over 51 billion euros. According to Catalonia Trade & Investment, Catalonia is home to 2,403 startups, the highest number on record and a 5% increase year-on-year. These companies generate nearly 3 billion euros in combined annual turnover and employ over 30,500 people. Since 2016, the number of startups in Catalonia has more than doubled. The most active sectors are fintech, health tech, and deep tech.

What it means for students

Barcelona is a city where you can find real internship opportunities with growth-stage companies, where the professional networks you develop during your studies connect you to active founders and investors, and where the business cases you work through in class are playing out in the city around you. Fintech, health tech, and deep tech companies are growing fast and hiring internationally educated graduates. Being here puts you in that pipeline.

Studying at the center of it

The SBS Swiss Business School Barcelona learning hub is located in Poblenou, the same neighborhood where the Barcelona Urban Tech Hub is currently being developed. The project, which is supported by Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Activa, and the IAAC, is expected to become one of the city’s most important new hubs for technological innovation and research. For years, Poblenou has been at the heart of Barcelona’s digital economy, attracting tech companies, creative studios, and startups. The Urban Tech Hub is the next chapter in that story, and SBS Barcelona students are already studying in the area where it is being developed.

That proximity is more important than you might realize. Studying business in a neighborhood like Poblenou means becoming a part of the ecosystem rather than simply learning about it. The events, companies, entrepreneurs, and innovators who create here are all within reach of SBS Barcelona students throughout their studies.
